IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Printed books and newspapers have been an important part of how people learn, stay informed and enjoy literature for centuries. Although the internet has made information far more accessible, I strongly disagree that printed newspapers and books will disappear completely, as their physical and practical value will continue to attract readers.

One of the strongest reason printed materials will survive is the reading experience they offer. Many people find it easier to concentrate on paper than on a screen, where notifications and other distractions can interrupt their attention. Physical books can also carry sentimental value and are often collected, gifted or kept for years. For these readers, a book is more than a source of information; it is something they can own and revisit.

Printed materials are also likely to remain important because online information is not always free or dependable. Producing reliable journalism and well-researched books requires significant investment, meaning digital platforms may charge subscriptions or place content behind paywalls. Printed publications can therefore remain a trusted alternative, particularly for readers who value carefully edited and permanent content.

Admittedly, many people will choose online sources because they are convenient and allow information to be accessed almost instantly. This is particularly useful for people who need to keep up with rapidly changing news or carry numerous books without the physical weight. However, choosing digital media for convenience does not mean that people will stop appreciating or purchasing printed materials altogether.

In conclusion, online reading may certainly become more dominant and cause the printing industry to shrink considerably. Nevertheless, I believe printed newspapers and books will continue to exist because convenience alone cannot replace the focus, ownership and reliability that physical publications provide.
