IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary societies, it has been seen that people get information majorly from the internet. However, there is the notion that newspapers and books may not be printed in the future as people will turn to the internet to get all the information that they need without a fee. In my opinion, I strongly agree with this because, detailed information can be accessed from the internet and it is readily available compared to newspapers or books. These points will be further explained in the following paragraphs with relevant examples followed by a logical conclusion.

To begin with, phasing off newspapers and books in the future will ensure availability of detailed informations. People will no longer find the need to patronize newspaper stands or book shops which can sometimes be time consuming and expensive. Furthermore, information available in books and newspapers are majorly summarized and limited in order for the pages not to be cumbersome. And there is the internet, that can provided detailed informations, diagrammatic illustrations with references without considering the number of pages or word limits.

Furthermore, information provided via the internet is readily available. With a mobile phone and an internet connection an individual will be able to access different sources of information. However, phones are very handy and they can be carried around, this ensures that one can gain knowledge anywhere they are and at anytime. For example, a student can travel home from school for the holidays without carrying their books but can still be able to gain knowledge through studying from the internet.

In conclusion, printed newspapers or books might be phased off in the future, as people will have access to information on line for free, this will ensure detailed information that will be readily available for users.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you argue that the internet provides more detailed information, you do not fully address the counter-argument or the nuance of the prompt regarding the 'free' aspect of online content. The points are relevant but could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis of why physical media might become obsolete. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, merely restating the introduction rather than synthesizing the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more comprehensive exploration of the topic rather than just stating the advantages of the internet.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph between the mention of 'cumbersome' pages and the internet's capacity is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the use of referencing is sometimes repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas flow more naturally from one to the next would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'diagrammatic illustrations' and 'contemporary societies.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'phasing off' (should be 'phasing out') and the non-count noun error 'detailed informations' (information is uncountable). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common words. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating basic terms like 'information' and 'books' too frequently by using synonyms or paraphrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'information... are majorly summarized' (subject-verb agreement error, as 'information' is singular) and 'can provided' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'And there is the internet, that can provided...' which is grammatically incorrect. To achieve a higher band, focus on eliminating these recurring errors in subject-verb agreement and verb tense, and aim for more consistent control over complex sentence structures.
