IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I widely believe that technology has transformed modern society. People prefer online information over reading printed books. Modern technology has both positive impact as well as drawbacks.

If we look at the advantages, we all are familiar about how more people are into digital literacy. Technological advancements have revolutionised the way people communicate and work. I agree with the statement because printed newspaper is an expensive option. Moreever, It consumes so much time to go and get the printed newspaper. Printed newspaper can have limited information, you can not read large amount of data or different prespectives through printed newspaper. It costs your time, money and provides limited information. Online news or research is just a one click away. It does not consume so much of time to get the unlimited data and information. There are number of resources and unlimited variety of data availbe online which makes you aware of different prespectives so you can have better understandings and ideas. Moreever, Digital news do not cost you a single penny.

On the other hand, There are so many adverse effects of online reading. Online culture made most of the people less productive. People stopped putting efforts and things are easily accessable. Although, there is a vast data and network but it engages many people in negative activities like hate commenting and judging. Ultimately this shapes a person's mind negatively. There are numerous ads available on internet so a child who is an under age can not focus on reading as sometimes ads are not appropriate so one have to be very careful while searching data online.

Technology and printed newspaper both have positive and adverse effects. It depends on a person's mindset how positively he uses the platform to shape his mind. I truly believe this should be a personal choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt, but the position is somewhat inconsistent. While you state you agree with the statement, the conclusion suggests it should be a 'personal choice,' which weakens the clarity of your stance. The ideas are relevant, such as cost and convenience, but they are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For example, the argument about printed newspapers being 'expensive' and 'time-consuming' is mentioned multiple times without further elaboration. To reach a higher band, ensure your position is clearly maintained throughout and that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-developed point rather than restating the same ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate. For instance, 'Moreever' is used incorrectly as a transition, and the capitalization of 'It' after a comma is a punctuation error that disrupts the flow. While there is a clear progression from advantages to disadvantages, the linking between sentences could be more sophisticated. Improving the variety of your transition words and ensuring they are used correctly will help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, but there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors. Examples include 'under age' (should be 'underage'), 'availbe' (spelling error), and 'large amount of data' (should be 'large amounts of data'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning collocations—such as 'access information' rather than 'accessable'—and work on using more academic synonyms to replace basic words like 'good' or 'bad'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Digital news do not cost'), article usage (e.g., 'a child who is an under age'), and incorrect sentence fragments or comma splices. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
