IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Reading is becoming quite popular in the contemporary society. In fact, a section of society asserts that in the upcoming years, due to the free availability of newspapers and books online, people will prefer reading these instead of purchasing hardcopies. Although there are some valid arguments in favour of such a trend, this essay largely disagrees with this perspective since it provides tangible experience to the reader and is free from distractions.

Even though, reading digitally can have a few benefits, predominant one is convenience. This is because people can access the resources such as magazines, a piece of information, books anywhere internet is available from their electronic devices, that too without spending money. As a result, they would prefer reading online instead of getting these in real.

Despite having some merits, people would still prefer getting information from buying real books and newspapers in the coming times, as it would provide them with a hands-on experience. To substantiate this, most people love reading offline, owing to the fact that it is not only safe for their eyes but also gives them a real feeling, when they hold books in their hand. For instance, many elders would prefer reading offline, since they might not be that much familiar with electronic devices and also it might causes them eye-strain. On top of that, offline books are free from distractions, such as notifications and hyperlinks, leading to more focus and concentration on the information.

In conclusion, I aver that though reading online can has a few upsides, such as cost-effective and easy to get, offline reading offers far more advantages than it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that disagrees with the statement. The ideas are relevant, focusing on the tactile experience of reading and the lack of digital distractions. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding eye strain is a valid point, but it could have been expanded with more depth or a broader societal perspective to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and lacks a summary of the main points, which slightly affects the overall impact of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the opposing view from the writer's own position. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Despite', and 'To substantiate this' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition in the second paragraph from the benefits of digital reading to the conclusion of that paragraph is a bit repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses some appropriate collocations like 'tangible experience', 'electronic devices', and 'eye-strain'. However, there are instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'getting these in real' and 'cost-effective and easy to get', which sound unnatural. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise and sophisticated vocabulary to express complex ideas. The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'it might causes them eye-strain' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'reading online can has a few upsides' (incorrect modal verb usage). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would improve this score.
