IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Their is no doubt that internet and technology changes the methods of reading and many others and also in future it increses. It is also think that in future no one will buy the printed newspapers or books because everyone use online methods. It depends upon everyone views but from my prospective I strongly disagree with this because we lost our interest whenever we use mobile phones for reading purposes.

It is good that we read anything like newspaper and books online without paying but it changes our habbits. Mostly we use mobile phone for such purposes but it reduce our interest we do not pay heed to our reading because we become more interested in other things like we want to use social media apps and other things. But when we learn or read from hard copies like books and newspapers etc we stayed focused and more active in our work and actually in my views it is more enjoyable method of reading the to online one.For instance, last weak I am trying to read a topic which is why nations fails by using may mobile phone,I hardly read one paragraph and then still using Tiktok and started scrolling social media , but whenever I read or studied on any topic physically I still focused and learn so much.

Moreover, online reading also do not good for us physically because it damage our eyesite because the things that we use for online reading like mobile phones and laptops etc their screen contain rays that damage us and also makes us mentally weak. For instance, my cousion use laptop for his work , he works online , before this he is a weel healthy boy but when he started this his eyesite become week and also become mentaly week and sometimes he foeget many thing that are important for him.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the idea that printed media will disappear. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. While you provide reasons such as focus and health concerns, the arguments lack depth and academic nuance. For instance, the discussion on 'mental weakness' is anecdotal and lacks a broader perspective on the digital shift. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more sophisticated reasoning rather than relying solely on personal examples like your cousin or your experience with TikTok. The response covers all parts of the task, but the depth of analysis is consistent with a lower band descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'It is also think that' and 'It depends upon everyone views' create awkward transitions. The progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the jump from reading habits to social media usage feels abrupt. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') and ensure that each sentence flows logically from the previous one.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'increses' instead of 'increases', 'habbits' for 'habits', and 'eyesite' for 'eyesight'. Additionally, the phrasing is often simplistic or unnatural, such as 'we do not pay heed to our reading' or 'we become more interested in other things'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more academic collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'Their is no doubt' (should be 'There'), 'last weak I am trying' (should be 'last week I was trying'), and 'my cousion use laptop' (should be 'my cousin uses a laptop'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are significant issues throughout the text. While you attempt some complex sentences, they are often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and consistent verb tenses before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
