IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The rapid development of the internet has significantly changed the way people access information. Some people believe that printed newspapers and books will eventually disappear because people can read everything they need online for free. Although I agree that digital media will become increasingly dominant, I do not believe that printed publications will completely disappear.
There are several reasons why people prefer reading online. First, digital content is usually more convenient and accessible than printed material. People can use smartphones, tablets or computers to read news and books wherever they are, without having to carry heavy newspapers or books. In addition, online information can be updated immediately, which is particularly important for news websites. Another major advantage is that there is a vast amount of free content available on the internet, including news articles, educational materials and e-books. As a result, many people, especially younger generations, are becoming less interested in buying printed publications.
However, it is unlikely that printed books and newspapers will disappear entirely. One reason is that not all online content is free. Many reputable newspapers and publishing companies require readers to pay subscriptions or purchase digital books. Furthermore, printed books offer a reading experience that many people still value. They do not require batteries or an internet connection, and some readers find it easier to concentrate when reading from paper rather than a screen. Printed books are also commonly purchased as gifts and are collected for personal or academic purposes.
In conclusion, I agree that the popularity of printed newspapers and books will decline as online reading becomes more convenient and affordable. Nevertheless, I disagree with the idea that printed publications will completely disappear, because many people will continue to value their convenience, reliability and traditional reading experience.
