Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding speed and cost are relevant and supported by examples, such as the comparison between online news and newspapers. However, the development is somewhat limited; the examples provided are generic and lack specific detail, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, but the overall depth of analysis could be improved by exploring counter-arguments or nuances, such as the value of physical books or the reliability of online information, to provide a more balanced and comprehensive discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow between sentences feels a bit disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'aforementioned' and 'environmental friendly', though the latter contains a grammatical error ('environmentally friendly'). Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'fast-forward technology' or 'physical tools'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. Increasing the use of topic-specific collocations and refining word choice would significantly improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'within a seconds', 'peoples do not need', 'the news were gone viral', and 'in compare to'. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. While they do not impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of control over more complex structures. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing prepositions or auxiliary verbs.
