IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Due to availability of newspaper and books in internet without any expenses, it is thought that printed forms of books and newspaper will vanish in the future. In this digitalized world, most of the people prefer to search through internet for everything rather than depending on physical forms of such books. So, I agree that nobody might buy them in the future.

Nowadays, people want convenient ways to get access to information which is possible through online. We can get anything we want just on one click. Reading books or newspaper does not require us to physically move and search for it. Likewise, getting access to news is far more efficient through online rather than printed forms. For instance, we can know about the incident of flood occurred in Rasuwa, Nepal in a blink of an eye through online platform which might take days for printed newspaper to publish it.

Other reason for dependence on online platform is that it does not require any amount. We have access to internet then we can learn about everything not just reading books or news. Moreover, people can learn about things happening all around the world not just the surrounding we live in. For instance, we get access to the situation of Israel and Palestine war as well as Ukraine Russia war without having to move a foot. In this fast pace world, time is really important to people so they do not want to waste their time being physically present just to read books or newspaper which we can simply do through our mobile phone.

In conclusion, people are dependent on digitalized technology and this will keep increasing in the future. This results in no interest of individual to buy printed newspapers or books.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the statement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide relevant examples like the Israel-Palestine conflict and the flood in Nepal, the argument remains somewhat one-sided and lacks depth regarding the potential counter-arguments or the nuance of why some people might still prefer physical books (e.g., tactile experience, eye strain). To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph fully explores the implications of your points rather than simply listing them. The conclusion is a bit brief and could better synthesize the main arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Likewise', 'For instance', and 'Moreover' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump from discussing the speed of news to the cost of internet access in the second and third paragraphs could be better bridged. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always clear; some sentences, such as 'We have access to internet then we can learn about everything', lack a strong cohesive link to the preceding point.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'digitalized', 'efficient', and 'fast pace world'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in internet' (should be 'on the internet') and 'without any expenses' (more naturally 'free of charge'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to media consumption and digital technology to show a greater degree of flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the internet', 'a newspaper') and prepositions ('in internet', 'on one click'). Some sentence constructions are slightly awkward, such as 'Other reason for dependence on online platform is that it does not require any amount.' Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout the text.
