IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The future of smart gadgets is brighter. Every new system that comes into existence is based on new technologies. New things replace the existing ones . The books and newspapers used by people in past years to gather information seem likely to disappear in the coming years. I strongly believe that advanced mobiles, computers, watches , and many other digital tools will steeply halt the use of printed books and newspapers.

The current era is filled with an enormous amount of electronic devices. They all support Wi - Fi , artificial intelligence, high-quality resolution screens, and many other advanced features. People carry smart mobile phones, tablets, watches, and digital pens. Globally connected devices can fetch a vast range of data from any destination in the world whenever an individual wants, at any time, and in any place, without annoyance or needing help from others.

In universities, libraries have implemented networks of computers where students can study their thesis books , magazines, articles , etc. They no longer need to go through every page to read the desired topic. Once they enter the specific page number or a title of any topic , the system brings them to that exact location without exhausting, frustrating , or tiring them . Whereas printed books or any printed reading materials require a lot of effort, as producing a huge amount of paper involves cutting trees, going through multiple processes , and the paper coming into existence. Then the text is written on it, multiple copies are generated, and they are distributed across cities via different postmen

.

In conclusion, electronic devices are more feasible to use at any time than reading newspapers and books. Thus, in every aspect, digital data is more in demand. Hence , tangible sources of reading will lose their identity, and people will prefer to buy smart tools instead of buying them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position that digital media will replace printed materials. However, the argument is somewhat one-sided. While you mention the convenience of digital tools, you do not address the 'without paying' aspect of the prompt, which is a crucial part of the task. The development of ideas is generally relevant, but the explanation regarding the environmental impact of paper production is a bit tangential to the core issue of whether people will stop buying books because they are free online. To reach a higher band, ensure you address all components of the prompt equally and provide more nuanced support for your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Whereas' and 'In conclusion', to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the discussion of university libraries and the environmental impact of paper production is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enormous amount', 'feasible', and 'tangible sources'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'steeply halt' (which is an awkward collocation) and 'without annoyance' (which is not the most natural way to express ease of use). You also repeat certain words like 'books' and 'newspapers' frequently. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and idiomatic collocations to show a higher level of lexical control and to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the paper coming into existence' and 'without exhausting, frustrating, or tiring them', which sound slightly unnatural. Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some inconsistent spaces before commas and periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision will help you improve your accuracy.
