IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that the importance of printed newspapers and books will be vanished soon as readers will be able to access the materials online at free of cost. Although, the recent developments in line with this argument, I would prefer to think otherwise. Because, reading is an experience rather than gaining knowledge and sharing data and I believes, only the printed media could serve this purpose.
The empirical data from a recent survey research suggests that the percentage of serious readers are very less in online medium. During the study, a substantial number of repondents mentioned that the level of staisfaction is very less when they read online. Thus, majority of the participants follow the treditional way of choosing printed medium. Moreover, the study identified that online reading leads to physical ailments such as eye strain and headache in every category of the population. This serious health drawbacks still enourage people to purchase printed versions of books and newspapers rather than switching to online.
Although, it is evident that there is a growing trend of transition from printed medium to online platforms. However, the study identified only a negligible group who spend time online for reading. On the contrary to the argument, the online platforms dedicated for reading are not free and they charge when we choose to read more of the content. Obviously, they have to meet the cost of operation through reader's subscription and advertisment. It is unlikely that these platforms will become absolutely free in the near future.
In summary, the market for printed books and newspapers will not fade in the future, rather it will increase it's marcket share due to the above discussed reasons. The online medium cannot beat this trend in the near future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the idea that printed media will disappear. The ideas are relevant, focusing on the sensory experience of reading, health concerns, and the economic reality of online subscriptions. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that online reading leads to 'physical ailments' is a strong point, but it could be better supported with more nuanced reasoning. The argument regarding costs is also a bit simplistic. While the position is clear throughout, the essay would benefit from more depth in explaining why the 'experience' of reading is superior in print to fully convince the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Moreover', 'Thus', and 'On the contrary' are used to link ideas. However, there are some issues with the mechanical use of these devices. For example, starting sentences with 'Although,' followed by a comma, or 'Because,' as a sentence fragment, disrupts the flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the health argument and the economic argument could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion needs more variety and grammatical precision to reach a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'empirical data', 'respondents', and 'negligible group'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'will be vanished' (should be 'will vanish'), 'at free of cost' (should be 'free of charge'), and 'treditional' (spelling error). The repetition of 'online medium' and 'printed medium' also limits the range. To improve, the student should focus on more natural collocations and ensure accurate word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include sentence fragments ('Because, reading is...'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the percentage... are', 'it believes'), and punctuation errors (unnecessary commas after 'Although'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on mastering basic sentence structure and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and punctuation consistency.
