IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In this digital era, the future is expected to be more advanced because technology has been rapidly evolving and could potentially gradually replace newspapers and books. I disagree with this statement because while advancing in technology has its positive impact; there are several disadvantages include reduced reading habit, decline in literacy skills, loss of reliable information, and loss of cultural and historical records. In this essay, I will discuss my take on this statement and provide relevant information that would support my side.
People may adapt the habit of reading short online content which would reduce their ability to concentrate on complex tasks. Subsequently, people may read less thus their comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling may be affected which may result to decline in literacy skills. Printed physical books and newspapers often go through editing and fact-checking. However, online Information can be easily manipulated or spread misinformation resulting to loss of reliable information. Ultimately, physical books preserve cultural and historical archives. This could make future generations lose access to these records.
Although we are discussing about the future, this is actually our current situation. People in the educational field have expressed their concern regarding substantial decline of literacy skills. We should disseminate awareness about the significant benefits of reading physical books to support our next generation.
In conclusion, technology does have positive impact to our society. However, we should not let the digital advancement impact our children's educational welfare. It is important to preserve our printed books and newspaper to ensure that the future generation would be able to have critical thinking skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed the prompt by clearly stating your disagreement with the statement. You provided several reasons for your position, such as the decline in literacy skills and the importance of reliable information. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'cultural and historical records' is mentioned but not fully explored or exemplified. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your main points with more specific examples or logical explanations. The response is balanced, but the depth of analysis is slightly superficial, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands where ideas are fully developed and extended.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'subsequently', 'however', and 'ultimately', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the theoretical future with the current reality. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the progression of ideas feels more natural and less like a list of points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disseminate', 'digital advancement', and 'comprehension'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'disadvantages include' (should be 'disadvantages include the following' or 'disadvantages include...') and 'discuss my take on this statement' (which is slightly informal). You also use 'impact' as a verb in 'technology does have positive impact to our society', where 'impact on' would be more accurate. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'people may adapt the habit' (should be 'adopt'), 'result to decline' (should be 'result in a decline'), and 'discussing about' (should be 'discussing'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing articles or incorrect verb forms.
