IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this present era, technology is increasing very rapidly in the whole world , so it can be believed that in the upcoming period nobody will prefer to buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want through the online platforms without paying. I Strongly agree to this statement because its impacts can be seen in the upgoing time.

Most of the individuals prefer to read any newspaper or books online nowadays, there are only few who are reading the newspapers and books offline, for they are not in the habit of using technology. For instance , the old aged people always go through offline reading because in the ancient times the technology was not so developed as compared to present time, so they are not able to read through the mobile phones, in addition, they had not used mobile phone or any technological material in their period.

However, nowadays most of the individuals are engaged in online working , and they prefer reading newspapers and books from the same. Moreover, the upcoming generation will also use mobile phones or computers to read anything because in the upcoming period the technology will be more advanced. It can aslo be believed that the newspapers or books will be totally vanished from the world.

In conclusion, I would like to say that this statement is totally true that in future all the individuals will read online only they will never go through offline reading because they will not be able to adopt that habit.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is limited. While you argue that printed media will vanish, the reasoning relies on generalizations about age groups and technology adoption. The argument lacks depth; for instance, you mention that people will not pay for content, but you do not explore the economic implications or the counter-argument regarding the value of physical books. To reach a higher band, you need to provide more nuanced support and explore the complexities of the topic rather than repeating the idea that technology is simply 'advancing'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In this present era', 'Most of the individuals', and 'In conclusion' are used to signal transitions, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition between the habits of older people and the future of technology could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'technology is increasing', 'read anything', and 'totally vanished'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'upgoing time' and 'technological material', which are not standard English usage. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations. Instead of repeating 'newspapers and books', try using synonyms or broader terms like 'traditional print media' or 'physical publications' to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect article usage (e.g., 'in the ancient times'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'they had not used mobile phone'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. You should focus on proofreading for basic errors and practicing the construction of more complex, error-free sentences to improve your control over grammar.
