Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals contend that information are free and easily accessible online, so no one will buy physical newspapers and books in the future. I highly disagree with this statement because there are several negative impact that will take effect if people are solely relying on technology. This essay will further discuss the harmful effects of replacing printed books and newspapers in order to prevent the disappearance of physical books and newspapers.

Due to advancement of technology, physical book copies and newspapers have been slowly replaced by digital online. The downside of utilizing innovation are including but not limited to: decline of literacy, loss of reliable information, loss of cultural and historical archives, because majority of the society will form a habit of reading short-form online content resulting people to have difficulty with concentration and complex task affecting their comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, books and newspapers often undergo fact checking and cite proper sources, which is essential for disseminating information to public, ensuring that the data collection are credible and accurate. Meanwhile, online media content can be manipulated and would spread misinformation. Ultimately, future generations may lose access to our preserved cultural heritage and historical records.

In conclusion, while innovation do provide free and readily available access to information, there are various drawbacks that we also need to consider, such as preserving our printed books and newspapers to prevent the deterioration of literacy, the loss of cultural records and historical knowledge, and the reduced availability of accurate information.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position against the idea that physical media will disappear. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you identify valid concerns like literacy and misinformation, the essay lacks a counter-argument or a more nuanced exploration of why people might still choose physical books (e.g., tactile experience or collection value). The essay is quite short, and while it meets the minimum requirement, the arguments could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. You have focused heavily on the negative impacts of technology rather than fully debating the likelihood of the shift to digital, which is the core of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, a body paragraph, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the internal structure of the second paragraph is quite dense, with a long list of points that could have been better separated into distinct sentences or sub-points to improve flow. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the progression of ideas within the paragraph is a bit cluttered. Using more varied linking words and ensuring each sentence clearly connects to the previous one would improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disseminating', 'deterioration', and 'cultural heritage'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'information are free' is grammatically incorrect (information is uncountable), and 'downside of utilizing innovation are including' is awkward phrasing. You attempt to use academic vocabulary, which is good, but the precision is occasionally lacking. To improve, focus on ensuring that your word choices are grammatically compatible with the surrounding sentence structure and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'information are', 'downside... are', 'data collection are', and 'innovation do provide'. Additionally, there are sentence structure issues, such as the run-on sentence in the second paragraph starting with 'The downside of utilizing innovation...'. While you attempt some complex structures, the frequency of basic errors in agreement and pluralization prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for these fundamental errors, particularly with uncountable nouns and subject-verb agreement.
