In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

The premise that everything can be accessed online without paying overlooks the underlying economics of publishing. Producing rigorous journalism and well-researched literature incurs substantial operational costs. Consequently, prominent news organizations and publishers increasingly implement paywalls and subscription models to protect their revenue. Free online content is frequently fragmented, inaccurate, or cluttered with intrusive advertisements. Therefore, readers seeking authoritative reporting, specialized academic texts, or bestselling fiction must still pay, which invalidates the assumption that internet access equates to completely free information.

Furthermore, physical books and periodicals retain intrinsic merits that digital screens cannot replicate. From an ergonomic perspective, extensive screen time leads to digital eye strain and cognitive fatigue, making physical paper the preferred choice for sustained, focused reading. There is also an enduring cultural and emotional attachment to print. Many people value building personal libraries, appreciating the tactile quality of a book, or gifting tangible volumes. Similarly, the daily routine of browsing a print newspaper over breakfast remains a deeply entrenched ritual for millions of readers worldwide.

That is not to say traditional publishing will remain unchanged; the print newspaper industry in particular will continue to contract as fast-breaking news moves permanently to real-time digital channels. However, rather than facing total extinction, physical formats are evolving into deliberate, premium choices that cater to collector culture, deep reading, and archival value.

In conclusion, although the proliferation of digital platforms will certainly reduce the market share of traditional media, printed literature and newspapers will not vanish completely. Professional content will never be entirely free, and the distinct physical and intellectual experience offered by paper ensures its lasting relevance.
