Student answer (Band 6.0)

### IELTS Writing Task 2 — Band 5.5 Level

Nowadays, people can read newspapers and books on the internet very easily. Some people believe that in the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because everything will be available online for free. I partly agree with this statement because online reading is becoming more popular, but I do not think printed books and newspapers will completely disappear.

on the one hand, there are many advantages of reading online. People can get news and information quickly by using their mobile phones or computers. They do not need to go to a shop to buy a newspaper or book. Also, many websites provide free articles and some books, so it can save money. For example, students can find study materials and different books online without buying them.

on the other hand, I believe that printed newspapers and books will still be used in the future. Many people enjoy reading a physical book because it is more comfortable for them. Some people also like collecting books and keeping them at home. In addition, not all information on the internet is free. Many websites and online newspapers require a subscription or payment to read their full content.

In conclusion, I agree that online reading will become more common because it is easy and sometimes free. However, I disagree that printed newspapers and books will completely disappear, as many people still prefer physical copies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the arguments provided. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the point about 'collecting books' could be expanded to discuss the cultural or aesthetic value of physical media. Because the response is under-length, it fails to fully develop the ideas to the extent required for a higher band. The position is consistent, but the lack of length prevents a more comprehensive exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'on the one hand', 'in addition', and 'however' are used to link ideas. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between ideas could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which meets the requirements for a band 6.0. To improve, you should focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'books', 'newspapers', and 'online'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, there is a lack of less common or more precise lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choices are generally appropriate for the context, though they remain quite simple and functional rather than sophisticated or varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor errors, such as the lack of capitalization at the start of sentences ('on the one hand'), but these do not impede communication. The grammar is generally stable, and the sentence structures are clear. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, and ensure consistent attention to punctuation and capitalization rules, which are currently inconsistent in the body paragraphs.
