IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is believed that most people may not buy printed newspapers or books in the future, as they may find it more convenient and economical to browse the internet and access the information they need online without paying for it. I personally agree with this view because this will give individuals an opportunity to access free as well as accurate resources and read them from anywhere in the world.

One of the major reasons is that individuals will be able to access a wide range of reading materials, including books, newspapers and other articles, free of charge. This could also attract a wider audience, as some people may lack sufficient financial resources to purchase books that could broaden their knowledge. As a result, they can easily access various books and other materials at no cost, which may help them improve their communication skills. In addition, many people may start reading newspapers more regularly. For example, some individuals may want to keep up with the latest news and current events around the world, but they may not be able to afford printed newspapers. The availability of free e-books and newspapers can encourage people to read them more regularly. That is why this development will play a significant role in keeping the public informed about daily news.

Another reason is that people may experience less inconvenience, as they will not have to carry physical copies of books and newspapers with them all the time. They will not be limited to reading at home; instead, they will be able to access these materials wherever they go. Moreover, they can also make their journeys productive. For example, they can easily read the news and other useful online content on their mobile phones, even while travelling in vehicles. This opportunity will also enable individuals to stay informed about the latest developments around the world, as online news is updated frequently, meaning that they do not have to wait until the following day to receive new information. Furthermore, some traditional publishers may be biased and occasionally publish inaccurate reports. However, online platforms allow readers to compare reports from multiple sources, which can help them identify inaccurate information more easily.

In conclusion, the convenience, affordability and frequent updates offered by digital reading materials are likely to encourage more people to shift away from printed newspapers and books in the future.
