IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Though technological development will pave the way of online reading for free, it will hardly replace the use of printed newspapers or books. This is because of the

convenience of the readers, content verification issue of internet platforms.

If physical form of reading materials get converted to online versions, it is estimated that a lot of people may choose to read virtually. Nevertheless, smart devices are not as cheap as e-books. Due to the soaring price of smartphones and tablets, only a number of people have access to them. Moreover,broadband internet bill is another aspect to consider which needs to paid monthly in order to use online platforms. In brief, free source of reading may seem as a lucrative idea, but the cost hidden beneath it is the primary cause of inconvenience. On the hand, printed papers are inexpensive enough to be accessed by anyone. The raw materials of paper make it cheaper than the expensive material used in the making of digital devices. Hence, people will choose printed copies.

Regarding the authenticity of the online content , it is often considered to be skeptical due to internet's exposure to all kinds of people. For example, during election 2024 in Bangladesh, a specific group of supporters of a particular political party, spred rumors and propaganda through news to create conflict within the country. Such scenarios are the reason behind skeptism. In addition, immoral people illegally upload a book content under their name. It causes harm to that particular writer since he is often unaware of it.

In conclusion, internet can provide the free accessibility to reading books and news, but it have limitation regarding range of device pricing. Moreover, validation of contents is always a concern.
