IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing debate about the future of the printed newspaper and books. Some individuals argue that readers will have access to free online reading material. I partly agree with this statement as people may not buy pyscial newspaper or books because these items need to be carried and may provide old information. Nevertheless, individuals may need to buy subscription.
On the one hand, readers always need to keep printed materials with them. This means that if they purchase a book to read, they have to take it to library or school with him, however this is not the case with online material. Another reason is that news and information come extremely quickly on digital media rather than phyical form. As a result, many individuals have access to information at the same time. Whereas, newpapers mostly provide yesterday news. For example, in Pakistan, Geo newspaper had to shut down its production and explained that people thesedays have access to instant news form social media. Consequently, they do not purchase printed newspapers.
On the other hand, many crucial online materials need to be purchased before having access to it. This is because big companies have locked their books and resreach papers and require to buy subscription. Individuals who want to read them need to make payment. For instance, in Australia, reading hub website has restricted its online books and articles and requires to make payment before reading it.
To conclude, although indiviuals will read online news and books in the future, they still need to make payment before using it.
