IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
After coming of internet, the style of reading newspaper has got changed. Therefore, in the next few years nobody will buy printed newspapers or books they will be able to read everything online without spending money. I partially agree this situation because internet is not avilable in ever corner of the world. Most of the people of old generation are not able to using smartphone, but the people of this generation do not want to read news on paper because all people of this generation have own their smartphone.
The first major reason to support my view is that internet is not avilable in every corner of the world. In addition, many people living in the rural areas still do not have a stable internet connection. Therefore, newspaper and books are the best options for them.
Morever, most of the old people like to read news on papers because they do not know how to use a smartphone and may find it difficult to use digital device . As a result, they still prefer reading printed newspaper and book. For example, many older people have a habit of reading the newspaper every morning with a cup of tea, and they may not want to change this routine.
However, young people generally prefer reading news online rather than in printed newspaper because most of them own smartphone. They can easily access the latest news anytime and anywhere through the internet. Therefore, the demand for printed newspapers is likely deacrease among the younger generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position (partially agreeing) and supporting it with relevant arguments, such as the lack of internet access in rural areas and generational preferences regarding technology. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive at times. For instance, the point about internet availability is introduced in the introduction and then restated as the first main body paragraph without significant extension. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met adequately, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0 in terms of task coverage and idea development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, using introductory and body paragraphs appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'The first major reason', 'In addition', 'Morever', and 'However'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrase 'After coming of internet' is unnatural, and there are minor linking issues within sentences, such as 'books they will be able to read'. Paragraphing is present and logical, but the overall progression could be smoother. These features correspond to a Band 6.0 descriptor, where the overall arrangement is coherent despite some mechanical or faulty cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'generation', 'routine', 'access', and 'demand'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'coming of internet' instead of 'the advent of the internet', 'got changed' instead of 'changed', and 'avlible' (spelling error). Attempts at less common vocabulary are somewhat limited, and spelling mistakes like 'deacrease' indicate a Band 6.0 level, where the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message despite inaccuracies in spelling and word choice that do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although' or conditional-like structures, though many complex attempts contain errors. There are frequent grammatical mistakes, including missing articles ('Most of the people of old generation', 'own smartphone'), preposition errors ('avlible in ever corner'), and incorrect verb forms ('not able to using smartphone'). Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded. This balance of a mixed structural range with frequent non-impeding errors aligns with the Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptors, comfortably settling at a Band 5.5.
