IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people can get almost all kinds of information from the internet. Some people believe that in the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they can read everything online without paying. I disagree with this statement because printed materials will still be useful and popular among many people.

There are several reasons why online reading is becoming popular. First, it is very convenient. People can read news and books on their mobile phones at any time and in any place. They do not need to carry heavy books or buy a newspaper every morning. Second, online information can be updated quickly. For example, if an important event happens, people can read about it on a news website within a few minutes. In addition, many free websites and digital libraries provide useful information, especially for students.

However, I believe printed newspapers and books will not completely disappear. Many people enjoy reading a physical book because it is easier for them to concentrate without notifications or other online distractions. Printed books are also useful for students because they can underline important points and write notes on the pages. Moreover, some people like to collect books and keep them in their homes. Newspapers are also still useful for people who are not comfortable using smartphones or computers.

In conclusion, online reading will become more common because it is convenient, fast and often free. However, I do not think printed newspapers and books will completely disappear, as many people will continue to prefer reading physical copies.
