IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often argued that printed newspapers and books will eventually disappear because people will be able to access all the information and reading material they need online free of charge. Although digital content is likely to become increasingly dominant, I do not believe that printed publications will become completely obsolete.

There are several reasons why online reading is becoming more popular. First, digital material is convenient and instantly accessible. People can read news articles, novels and academic resources on smartphones, tablets or computers without visiting a shop or library. In addition, a large amount of online content is either free or considerably cheaper than printed material. This is particularly attractive to younger generations, who are already accustomed to obtaining information through digital platforms. Furthermore, electronic publications can be updated immediately, which gives online newspapers a major advantage over printed editions when reporting breaking news.

However, it is unlikely that printed books and newspapers will disappear entirely. Many readers still prefer physical books because they find them more comfortable and enjoyable to read for long periods. Printed books also provide a distraction-free experience, whereas digital devices may expose readers to notifications, advertisements and other interruptions. Moreover, not everything available online is free. Many reputable newspapers operate behind subscription paywalls, while e-books and academic publications often require payment. Physical books also continue to have value as gifts, collectors' items and educational resources, particularly for people who prefer traditional learning methods.

In conclusion, I agree that digital reading will continue to expand and may become the main way in which people access information. Nevertheless, I disagree with the claim that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books in the future, as physical publications will continue to appeal to certain readers and serve purposes that digital alternatives cannot fully replace.
