IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this rapidly evolving world, newspaper or books are outdated and no one wants to utlize it. They peffer to use internet. According to my perspective, I largly agree with this statemnet.

Individuals are more utlizing internet and social media to gather the information of the current situation of the world rather reading the newspaper or books. The particular reason for this circumstances, is the internet is free and it is very easy to use and the other benifit is the it can be accessed within any part of the world. For example, if a person wants to study and he does not have the required resources like books then he can download that particular book from the internet with or without paying any fees and due to vast connection areas of internet he can study anywhere in the world. People are priotizing internet over physical copies because of it have many benifits like it is free, it is very reliable and it covers almost the whole world.

Internet and social media noy only have the benifits but also some demerits too, like long exposure to mobile or any type of other computer screen can cause several eye related problems like headache, blurry vision, and some time it can affect our mental health. For example, if a person is surviving his whole day on support of mobile phone and social media he may get lazy and gain obesity and due to this several health related problem can be caused which is detrimental to human.

In conclusion, the usage of the internet is a best choice unless

it affect our health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I largly agree with this statemnet') and discussing both the benefits and potential drawbacks of online reading material. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the reasons provided for preferring the internet—such as being free, accessible, and reliable—are restated multiple times within the second paragraph without substantial extension into deeper analysis. Similarly, the health drawbacks mentioned in the third paragraph are somewhat generalised. Despite these limitations, the response engages directly with the prompt and presents a coherent point of view, aligning best with the Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic organisational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the overall progression is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of smooth transitions between ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'The particular reason for this circumstances, is...' and 'Internet and social media noy only have the benifits but also some demerits too'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final conclusion is abrupt and incomplete ('...unless it affect our health.'). Referencing is at times unclear, leading to a mechanical feel. These characteristics place the response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words like 'utlize', 'detrimental', and 'obesity'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('utlize' instead of utilize, 'peffer' instead of prefer, 'statemnet', 'benifit', 'priotizing') and inaccurate word choices or collocations, such as 'gathering the information of the current situation' and 'surviving his whole day on support of mobile phone'. These noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect the characteristics of a Band 5 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex attempts contain grammatical errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'For example, if a person is surviving his whole day on support of mobile phone and social media he may get lazy and gain obesity and due to this several health related problem can be caused...' There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it have many benifits', 'problem can be caused'), missing articles, and punctuation flaws. While simple sentences are generally understandable, the high frequency of grammatical slips affects readability and corresponds to a Band 5 score.
