In contemporary society, reading books and newspaper has emerged as a highly debated issue. While a number of segment believes that people can easily read from internet, others strongly oppose this notion. This essay aims to critically examine both perspectives. From my standpoint, I firmly agree that reading through internet has greater impact as it offers a multitude of significant advantages.
To commence with, a compelling reason supporting my viewpoint is that it is easy and convenient. When individuals read through internet, they become capable of managing their time schedule. Moreover, this not only enables them to save their time but also enhances their productivity. Consequently, a proportion of people can derive substantial benefits from online platforms. For instance, people who can not afford books price, they can read online. This example vividly illustrates that how reading online can exert positive impact on individuals. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the extent of agreement with the statement about printed materials versus online reading. A clear position is established in the introduction ('I firmly agree that reading through internet has greater impact') and maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas lacks depth and relies on repetitive, generalized explanations without sufficient concrete elaboration. For instance, the argument regarding environmental benefits is mentioned briefly as 'good for environment' and 'save planet' without providing specific examples or logical depth. The discussion of affordability states 'people who can not afford books price, they can read online,' which is a relevant point but remains underdeveloped. Overall, the task is addressed, but the support for main points tends to be somewhat superficial and lacks specific nuance, placing this performance at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, featuring an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as convenience, environmental impact, and counterarguments. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'To commence with,' 'Moreover,' 'Consequently,' and 'Additionally' are heavily relied upon to link sentences, creating a formulaic feel. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally vague, such as in the final paragraph where the transition 'In the contrary' (an error for 'On the contrary') disrupts the flow of the counterargument. While logical progression is generally maintained, the mechanical transitions and occasional awkward cohesive links prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, resulting in a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'contemporary society,' 'multitude of significant advantages,' and 'prudent utilization.' However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, the student writes 'reading books and newspaper' (missing pluralization), 'books price' instead of 'the price of books,' and 'yields far greater benefits' instead of 'yield far greater benefits.' Furthermore, phrases like 'cultivate their climate' are unnatural and imprecise. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical errors in word formation and collocation occur frequently enough to impede precision, reflecting the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with structures like 'While a number of segment believes that...' and 'For instance, people who can not afford...'. However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('a number of segment believes'), article usage ('through internet' instead of 'through the internet'), and prepositional errors ('reading through internet'). Additionally, punctuation and structural slips appear in the conclusion, such as 'reading internet may results in certain drawbacks' (missing preposition and incorrect verb form) and a comma splice: '...far more benefits, Therefore, online reading can actively promoted...' (missing auxiliary 'be'). Because errors persist and cause occasional strain for the reader despite a mix of structures, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
