IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's contemporary society, accessing information online has become increasingly important. Some people argue that in future, people will stop reading from prited papers altogether, while critics say traditional books cannot be replaced. I partially agree with the statement that online sources are widely accepted among people.

There are several reasons why people believe online sources will take the place of printed books because of its accessibility. People can have access to a wider range of information in just a click away, providing them will thousands of research papers and reading materials within seconds. Moreover, it is particularly advantageous for people from disadvantaged areas or those who live away from book stores,can be benefited to a relatively precised information at the comfort of their homes. Secondly, the readily available sources are free of cost, especially helpful for students who cannot afford to buy physical books.

On the other hand, critics say that printed sources and books cannot be replaced as they are traditional mode of learning and quite convenient to read. For instance, most people particlarly ederly, prefer to study from physical books as they find it hard to focus from screen. For the most part, it is often argued that studying from digital devices can have negative impact on mental and physical well-being, especially among people with eye-sight issues.

In my opinion, although online education will be widely admitted among people due to its convenience and accessibility, it would not replace books entirely. There is some times a confusion regarding to the authenticity of information as ones can come across several false information.

All things considered, online sources provide valuable and large amount of information in a moment, it would not replace physical books because of their authenticity. I believe that the combination of accessing information online with checking its authenticity and consulting physical books would be a balanced approach.

Nevertheless, the progression of thought is clear enough to guide the reader effortlessly through the text, satisfying the Band 6.5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'contemporary society', 'advantageous', 'disadvantaged areas', and 'authenticity'. However, there are several noticeable vocabulary errors, awkward word choices, and typos throughout the response. Examples include 'prited' instead of 'printed', 'at a click away' rather than 'just a click away', and 'ones can come across' instead of 'people can come across'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, placing the lexical resource firmly at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'in future' instead of 'in the future', 'books stores,can be benefited to a relatively precised information', and 'There is some times a confusion regarding to the authenticity'. Punctuation and article usage also need refinement. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the grammar score to a Band 6.0.
