IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that due to increased digitalization, the future generation will be completely dependent on online sources of reading and printed books and newspapers will no more be bought by anyone. I firmly disagree with this point of view as the traditional ways of reading might be still preferred by older generation and by people with eyesight ailments.

There are several reasons responsible for expected preference of traditional methods of reading in future, with people's concerns for their eyesight being the most prominent one. As a result of increased dependency on electronic gadgets, the screen time of individuals is significantly rising. Not only does it have an adverse effect on the visual ability, but it also results into serious health issues such as migraine. For instance, as per a survey conducted by The Times across individuals of 11-40 age group, the percentage of human beings with eye problems observed a noticeable surge over the recent years. Therefore, taking their health into consideration, several individuals will continue with offline methods of reading.

Another it is almost impossible for the elderly people to switch from offiline to online ways of getting information. In order to use the modern technological devices, it is mandatory to have appropriate knowledge of several applications and websites. The older generation, not being tech savy, will not be able to rely solely on the online sources. For instance, as per an article related to twitter and facebook, hardly 10% of the accounts belong to people of 55-75 age range. Owing to these facts, maximum proportion of aged people will continue reading newspapers and printed books rather than surfing online.

To conclude, although the popularity of social media apps and other online sources of information is growing at a fast pace, there are certain categories that will be interested for offline printed material.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-defined position against the prompt's extreme claim. The writer successfully outlines two main supporting arguments: health concerns related to prolonged screen time and technological barriers faced by the elderly. These ideas are sufficiently extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the mention of a Times survey and statistics regarding Twitter and Facebook usage among older demographics. Although the second body paragraph contains a slight phrasing omission in its opening sentence, the overall development of ideas aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors, as the position remains clear throughout and the main arguments are logically supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to separate supporting points. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Therefore', and 'To conclude' are employed to guide the reader through the text, though occasional mechanical transitions appear. Referencing is generally clear, and the logical flow between sentences is maintained, meeting the core requirements for a Band 7 score. Minor improvements in linking the second paragraph's opening would elevate the structural fluidity further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision, utilizing topic-specific phrases such as 'eyesight ailments', 'electronic gadgets', 'visual ability', and 'tech savy'. Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable success, although minor spelling slips occur, such as 'offiline' instead of offline, and 'savy' instead of savvy. Word choice and collocation are generally appropriate for conveying the intended meaning, supporting an adequate communicative range that fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 criteria, leaning towards a solid Band 6.0 due to recurring minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with effective deployment of subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'Taking their health into consideration, several individuals will continue...' and 'Owing to these facts, maximum proportion of aged people will continue...'. While there are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing—such as the incomplete sentence starter 'Another it is almost impossible' in the third paragraph and 'results into' instead of 'results in'—these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication. The control over grammar and punctuation justifies a solid Band 6 score.
