IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe, with the advancement of technology in upcoming years, no one will spend money on printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything online for free. I tend to disagree with this prespective and this essay will explain my points.

On one hand, as we are reaching towards more advanced era, people assume that the way of doing things would also change. They believe that people altogether will shift towards online learning approach because it is efficient and cheap. For example; if you could access everything on your smart devices for free, why would you want to leave your comfort zone and buy something like a newspaper or books? However, research shows that people are still eager to buy books and newspaper even if they cost them money.

On the other hand, no matter how advance our smart devices become, we will still buy printed study materials. This is because, when you are reading something straight from a physical book you tend to focus and concentrate. For instance; if you are reading something online you are constantly distracted by various other tasks you could do online, while books give you a complete focus on one thing. You can imagine things more vividly, which at the end of the day help you understand the writer better.

I believe that even in the future people will buy books. Maybe the purpose of buying books would not just be about getting better education, but to use it as a change of scenery.

In conclusion, buying books may cost money, but it has various other advantages which will make the reader to buy them. I firmly believe internet could never replace the feeling to reading a book physically.
