IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The development of digital technology has transformed the way people access information, making online newspapers and books increasingly popular. Some people believe that printed publications will eventually disappear because digital content can be accessed free of charge. Although I acknowledge that online reading offers considerable advantages, I largely disagree with the view that printed newspapers and books will become completely obsolete.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why digital publications may replace a substantial proportion of printed materials. Firstly, reading online is often more convenient and affordable, as people can access a vast amount of information through smartphones, tablets and computers without purchasing physical copies. For example, many news websites provide free articles, allowing readers to remain informed without subscribing to traditional newspapers. Secondly, digital platforms offer practical benefits, including instant access to international publications, searchable content and adjustable text sizes. These features are particularly attractive to younger generations, who are generally familiar with modern technology. Consequently, the demand for printed publications is likely to decline as digital alternatives become more accessible.
On the other hand, I believe that printed newspapers and books will continue to have a place in society. One important reason is that many readers prefer the physical experience of reading a traditional book, as it allows them to concentrate without the distractions associated with electronic devices. Printed materials are also useful for people who have limited access to reliable internet connections or electronic equipment. Furthermore, the assumption that all online content will remain free is unrealistic. Many publishers rely on subscriptions, advertising or paid memberships to finance their work, meaning that readers may still have to pay for certain digital publications. Therefore, printed materials may continue to attract consumers who value physical ownership, reading comfort and independence from electronic devices.
In conclusion, although the increasing availability and convenience of digital publications will probably reduce the demand for printed newspapers and books, I disagree that they will disappear entirely. I believe that both formats will continue to coexist, serving readers with different preferences and needs.
