IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued by some people that in future newpaper and book printed will reduce and almost all type of reading become possible online without any payment. Although some might disagree with this notion, I completely agree. Not only because of easily available and save money, but also because of easy to carry.

There are multiple advantages associated with online reading. Firstly, easily available when we want to read newspaper or book we can read can be considered as the leading benefit of this development. As all the newspaper and books are online abailable on Google, we can read anyone at anytime. Take an example, survey conducted in Germany, which showed that in 2028, 20% decrease in book and newspaper printed because of its online abailability. Thus, this key point, I believe, strongly supports my agreement with this statement.

Seconly, apart from easily available, also save money is also major contribution factor in this memace. As they available online so there are no need to buy this and they are available all the time. For example, in Japan student can spent their life with minimum expensis because they need no money to buy books due to its online availability. Hence, this key point further strenghens my view on this statement.

Finally, we can say because of its online availability there is no need to carry it can also be considered a leading a leading benefit this. As due to its online availability they don't need to carry like books.

To sum up, I believe that easily availability, no need of money and also because no need to carry them prevent leads to this in positive way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the statement, supported by three main arguments: easy availability, saving money, and portability. However, the development of these ideas is frequently superficial and repetitive. For instance, the second body paragraph relies on vague assertions and an unconvincing example regarding a survey in Germany, while the final body paragraph is extremely brief and underdeveloped. Although all parts of the prompt are addressed, the arguments lack sufficient extension and rely heavily on generalisations rather than detailed elaboration, placing this performance at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, featuring a basic introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression is hampered by repetitive sentence structures and a lack of smooth transitions between ideas. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'Seconly, apart from easily available, also save money is also major contribution factor'. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the final body paragraph consists of just a couple of disjointed sentences that fail to develop a coherent point. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, warranting a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is quite limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic phrases like 'online availability', 'easily available', and 'save money'. There are numerous spelling, word-choice, and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'newpaper and book printed', 'abailable', 'expensis', and 'memace' (likely intended to mean menace or factor). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic gist of the writer's arguments, the frequency of noticeable errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score to Band 4.5, which rounds to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of complex sentence attempts are faulty, incomplete, or grammatically unravelling, such as the fragment 'Not only because of easily available and save money, but also because of easy to carry.' There are frequent errors in word order, articles, and verb forms (e.g., 'no need to buy this', 'student can spent', 'prevent leads to this in positive way'). These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the precise meaning of several sentences, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptors closely.
