IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that in the future individuals will be able to read whatever they want on the internet without paying a single dollar and nobody would be interested to purchase printed newspaper or books. While there are valid arguments to the contrary, I strongly agree that people will have the luxury to read everything online in near future for free, primarily because internet access has made accessing information easier than ever and reading online provides you a number of accessibility tools as well.
The main reason why i hold this view is that we can get updated on the news and read books through our mobile phone. To elaborate, cell phones have internet access now which have provided us the luxury of listening to news and reading any book without any additional cost. A prime example of this can be seen when renowned news channels like Geo News and BBC News are broadcasting live round the clock on You-tube, completely free of cost. This clearly displays that listening to news has become significantly easy rather than just reading or buying newspapers.
A further reason for my position is that reading either books or news online offers you more accessibility options. Firstly, zooming text in and out making it easier for the reader to read and searching for the meaning of difficult words that you do not understand. Moreover, all of these tools are provided free on the website or app. In contrast, physical reading does not provide any of these benefits. Therefore, increasing number of people prefer to read books online.
In conclusion, despite opposing views, I strongly believe that in near future people would have completely shifted towards online reading rather than buying newspaper because they can read anything on the internet and with tools that help them without incurring any cost.
