IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

People are shifting to digital sources for information rapidly and in large numbers. This is attributed the the internet and technological boom across the world. Alongside working professionals, the emerging generation of students are already coming out of tech-driven classrooms. So, to say that people may stop buying paperbacks may not be far off from the truth. But, in many cases we are also seeing a revival in the demand for printed reading materials. So the notion might not be completely true.

Schools across China and Europe had transitioned to digital classrooms a few years ago. The change was so widespread that every child had a personal device to their name, used for learning, working as well as playing. But recent studies and research have highlighted the deteriorating literacy and education levels in such students. Furthermore, the constant exposure to screens and internet connectivity are adversely impacting children's health.

In a time when developing countries are playing catchup with tech-forward classrooms, countries are reverting to paperbacks and pencils in their educational institutions. This ternd reversal in not only limited to children but includes adults too. An increasing number of young adults are working to limit their screentimes, pushing them towards physical books. Masses are returning to public and community libraries in a bid to reduce hoarding, save costs, diversify their access to information and create meaningful interpersonal connections.

In the end, I disagree with the statement on the back the latest trends in our society - where more and more individuals are moving away from screens and internet, going back to existing communal resources and uplifting the local diaspora and businesses. I believe we will soon see an ecosystem where both digital and print media will coexist, playing different roles in the society.
