IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an increasing trend around the world reading online without paying rather then buying printed newspapers or books. I partialy agree with this view, although I belive that books are still good resources for better reading experience.

On the one hand, I agree that materials are easily available online to access them. Due to this, anyone can access those meterials anytime. As a result, online meterial usually saves our time as well as cost.

For example, if a student need to know something in a short time, he can access that targeted book or meterial online and can purchase that.

However, I believe that reading books physically can help us to understand more effectively. Printed books can keep reader focused, stopping reader from breaking concentration such as notifications and message etc. Turning real book or newspaper pages encourages reader to slow down and process information throughly, rather then skimming like we do on web page.

So, reading printed stuff can help the reader to maintain their focus, and help the reader to get better understanding. Research showed that, the readers who uses the physical books can create plans, maps and structures to get a better idea or for a long lasting memorizatioon.

For example, reading from online web can distruct the reader in many ways, he might loss interest, but if he will use a physical book that will give continious signals to mind.

In conclusion, although online method has benifits, I believe that printed books should also considered.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the accessibility of online materials and the cognitive benefits of physical books. A clear position is established in the introduction ('I partialy agree with this view') and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with examples, such as students accessing targeted books quickly, although some arguments tend to overgeneralise slightly (e.g., claiming online reading always disrupts concentration). The development is relevant and sufficient to meet the requirements of the task, earning a band score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments about online availability versus physical book benefits. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'Due to this' and 'So, reading printed stuff'. Referencing is generally clear, but repetitive phrasing in cohesive devices prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structure is clear and follows a standard essay format, aligning with the descriptors for band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'concentration', 'thoroughly', and 'memorisation'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'partialy' instead of partially, 'belive' instead of believe, 'meterials' instead of materials, 'distruct' instead of distract, 'loss' instead of lose, and 'benifits' instead of benefits. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to band 5.5 because precision and accurate spelling are lacking in several instances.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if a student need to know...') and concessive clauses ('although online method has benifits...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'if a student need', 'the readers who uses') and prepositional usage. Punctuation is also occasionally weak. These errors do not impede overall communication, but their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a band 6.0, making band 5.5 a fair and accurate representation of the writer's grammatical control.
