IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this modern era, technology has developed so much and has become easily accessible.Due to which some people believe that in the future people won't buy newspapers or books because they will be easily available online that to for free.I believe that this could happen and i won't mind because of the benefits we get from this.

Let's look into the benefits we cn get if books and newspaper become easily accessible.Their alot of people that can't afford to read books due to the high prices. This ends if books and newspaper become available online. So,the most significant benefit is one can download books and newspaper free of cost. For instance, poor people who cannot afford education can't do anything about it even if they want to.But due to easily assecible books and newspapeer they can learn alot.

Even though their are many benefits but on the other hand their are many disadvantages of this too.The most important disadvantage is that reading online on a screen can cause severe harm to one's eyes.Specially if the ir is excess use of screen.Excess use of screens also affects the nervous system negeatively. For instanc, too much use of screen causes brain fog and blindness.

To conclude,i agree that in the future the need to buy newspapers or books willl decrease. But i do believe that it will benefit us if we use this develpment correctly.Furthermore, it depends on the individuals how they use the thing and get benefitted or use it negatively ignoring the warnings and cause harm to themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, offering a clear position regarding the future of printed books and newspapers. The writer considers both the advantages and disadvantages of free online reading, such as accessibility for poorer individuals and potential negative health impacts like 'brain fog and blindness'. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and superficial. For instance, the argument regarding education and poor people is stated rather than deeply extended. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical, with issues such as missing spaces after punctuation marks ('online that to for free.I believe', 'So,the most significant'), and overused or simplistic referencing and linking devices ('Even though their are many benefits but on the other hand...'). These mechanical issues prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'accessible', 'disadvantages', and 'nervous system'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('negeatively', 'assecible', 'newspapeer', 'willl'), grammatical word-form errors ('easily assecible books'), and word choice issues ('too much use of screen' instead of 'screen time'). While communication is not severely impeded, these recurring inaccuracies restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and concessive structures like 'Even though their are many benefits but on the other hand...'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('their are many benefits'), incorrect capitalization ('i', 'india'), and punctuation spacing errors. Complex structures are often faulty. These errors place the grammatical performance at Band 5.0.
