Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The candidate addresses the prompt by clearly stating their position in the introduction ("i totaly agree with this syayement"). Ideas are presented regarding the convenience, cost-effectiveness, and potential health drawbacks of online reading, matching the requirements of Band 5. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the discussion around financial aspects and accessibility is circular and lacks clear supporting examples from broader contexts. The arguments remain underdeveloped and rely on general assertions rather than well-supported extensions. Consequently, the response aligns best with the Band 5 descriptor where ideas are limited and under-developed, and the position, while clear at the start, lacks thorough expansion throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The essay displays an attempt at paragraphing, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression of ideas is hindered by a lack of clear internal logical structuring and run-on sentences. For example, the second sentence of the first body paragraph contains multiple clauses linked by conjunctions and transitional phrases like "meanwhile", "eventho", and "subsequently", creating a convoluted and confusing sentence structure. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as "howevere in online" and "in conclusion. weighing up both the sides i firmly". Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of argument. These issues place the response firmly at Band 4, as information and ideas are not arranged cohesively enough for a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word formation that occasionally impede communication. Examples include spelling mistakes such as "todays", "wiyhout", "totaly", "syayement", "avlaible", "stationary" (instead of stationery), "migrain", "acces", and "advantyages". The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary items like "contemporary era", "pocket friendly", and "one-time investment", but their inaccurate usage and awkward collocations lead to strain for the reader. There is a lack of precision in lexical selection, restricting the range to basic and minimally adequate terms. This performance is characteristic of Band 4, where basic, repetitive vocabulary and frequent errors strain the reader's comprehension.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical structure of the essay is heavily flawed, consisting primarily of extremely long, poorly punctuated run-on sentences rather than a controlled mix of simple and complex forms. For instance, the second body paragraph consists of just two massive sentences packed with subordinate clauses, incorrect punctuation, and missing capitalization. Errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are frequent, such as "it have significant advantages", "it have some corns also", and "it able the many scopes". Punctuation is largely neglected, with commas used incorrectly and sentence boundaries frequently blurred. Due to the very limited control over complex structures and the high frequency of grammatical errors that regularly obscure meaning, the response corresponds to Band 4.
