IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays because of the advancement and rapid growth of social media, most of the things are shifting online. Newspapers and books are also among them, in the near future,it is expected that no individual would invest in physical newspapers and books just because they get access of the content online. I would partially agree to this and following paragraphs would enlight this statement more in depth.
Firstly, I would talk about why it is likely that evreything can shift online resulting in no sale of newspapers and books. The best advantage online service provides is convenience,an individual may not need to physically travel to buy a paper or book, same content is very easily available on the device they hold in their hands. Moreover, cosuming content online is much cost-efficieng than to invest in phsycial ones. The young audience and youth highly rely on social media and stays updated so they will surely avoid wasting their money on newspaper.
On the other hand, in my opinion newspapers and books won't really get obsolete from market because elderly people are still dependent on printed newspapers and majority of the old individuals does not have access to internet. Similarly, there is a particular audience who prefers buying a book and reading it rather than consuming the content online, reading through books provide them with exclusive experience and a sense of satisfaction which they can't really get on online devices.
To conclude, I think audience who would buy printed newspapers and books may gradually decrease but would not go extint because of the preference of elder people and the bookworms who love collecting print of novels and stories.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both sides of the argument. The student examines why digital media is attractive, citing convenience and cost-efficiency, while also presenting counterarguments concerning elderly readers and traditional book enthusiasts. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas are somewhat generalized and could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper explanation. For instance, the discussion on why the elderly lack internet access could be developed further. Overall, the task is adequately fulfilled and meets the criteria for a Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the advantages of digital media versus the continued demand for print. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition words like 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude'. However, some referencing is slightly loose or repetitive, and punctuation around discourse markers occasionally lacks precision, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'near future,it' and 'convenience,an'). Logical progression is maintained throughout, placing this response securely in the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'advancement', 'obsolete', and 'exclusive experience'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'evreything', 'cosuming', 'cost-efficieng', 'phsycial', 'extint', and 'elder people' instead of 'elderly people'. These errors do not impede communication since the reader can easily understand the intended meaning, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on proofreading for spelling and exact collocations would improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, including comma splices and missing articles (e.g., 'no individual would invest', 'content online', 'provides is convenience,an individual'). Despite these errors, the structures used do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. The grammatical control aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6, featuring adequate control over simple sentences while complex structures still introduce minor inaccuracies.
