IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent year, people are more tent to use softcopies of books and periodicals because it is convenient for them and easy to access at everyplace. It is stated that, in the future everyone used to by that. I partially agree with this statement that will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

In one hand, automobiles and smart technologies provide conveniency and availability of newspapers and other reading materials so that, people can easily get access of that reading materials at anytime and anywhere. Moreover, websites provide free news and articles for reader. To read news and articles, people need to spend money if they purchase printed one while, the same information can be available online without paying any fees or spending money on it.

On the other hand, many people prefer the physical experience of reading books. Some youngsters and old age people, who are fascinated about reading and want some sense of touch of reading, are like to buy printed materials for reading. For example, in 2015, Harry Potter Books were famous and trended that days because the author used so many artifacts and design in their books so that, that time adults were like to buy hardcopies of those books and want that experience. furthermore, it has benefits on human health. if person read long time by using phones and computers, that emits harmful rays which effect on eyes and brain functioning. While, reading printed books for long time do not have any physical harmness.

In conclusion. Although technology give conveniency, availability and do not need to pay money on reading, it effects on people's health cannot be neglected.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument regarding free online reading versus physical books and states a partial position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and contains noticeable generalisations. For example, the claim that computers emit harmful rays affecting brain functioning lacks adequate substantiation or formal support. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the supporting arguments in body paragraphs remain underdeveloped, placing this response firmly in Band 6. The position is clear throughout the text, but the elaboration on the health impacts and reader preferences requires greater depth and precision to reach higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs, although the conclusion is unhelpfully punctuated as a fragment ('In conclusion. Although...'). Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'In one hand' (which contains a minor lexical slip for 'On the one hand'), 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the phrasing 'so that, people can easily get access'. Paragraphing is present and broadly appropriate, but the cohesion within sentences occasionally falters, leading to a Band 6 performance for this criterion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words and phrases such as 'conveniency', 'softcopies', and 'artifacts'. However, there are frequent inappropriate word choices and non-standard collocations, such as 'more tent to' instead of 'more prone to' or 'tend to', 'by that' instead of 'buy that', and 'harmness' instead of 'harm'. Spelling and word-formation errors, while they do not heavily impede overall communication, occur with enough frequency to restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. Frequent errors include tense and agreement issues, such as 'everyone used to by that', 'if person read long time', and 'that effects on people's health'. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with comma splices and fragment sentences like 'In conclusion. Although technology give conveniency... it effects on people's health cannot be neglected.' These persistent errors in basic and complex structures cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar with a Band 5 descriptor.
