IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the accessibility of online reading materials in free of cost will make the newspaper less preferred among the individuals. While buying newspapers and books, develops a habit reading daily, I believe that economic advantages and convenience offered by online platforms are more significant for us.

Through online platforms, one can read anything at any time by sitting anywhere. In this modern age where people want to have everything lying on their bed, online media have provided this privilege to people. People can go through an article or scroll the news feed resting on their own comfort zone. Similarly, it is difficult to get newspaper on our hands at any random time. If some events occur in any part of the world, we must wait until the next morning to get information regarding that if we rely on newspapers. However, the news can be uploaded instantly in the website, leading to quick circulation among the citizens. This convenience of accessibility may sometimes used to warn public about emergencies that occur instantly. For example, if a nation has to inform general public about certain flooding, it is technically impossible to print newspapers and circulate it around the country. Nevertheless, online media can be used as a quick medium for this purpose.

Generally, one need not to spend money to access books available on website, where buying of physical books involves spending a large amount of money. Only the charge of Wi-Fi and a little investment on buying mobile phone is enough to control a large investment on buying numerous expensive books. This can solve the problem of finance acting as a limiting factor for study. Moreover, the flexibility of multiple sources of information is provided by the online platforms, where reader can compare and gain the information from various authors. On the contrary, the information is limited to only few sources and the study material itself may not be enough in the physical books.

In conclusion, it is true that physical books and newspapers are more engaging, but the ease of access and flexibility offered by online mediums are more relevant and advantageous to the general public.
