IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

IT IS DEFINITELY A HARD NET TO CRACK WHETHER IN UPCOMING YEARS THE RATIO OF BUYING PRINTED NEWSPAPER OR BOOKS WILL REDUCE AS ALL SUCH INFORMATION WILL EASILY AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET WITHOUT PAYING ANY EXTRA CHARGES. THOUGH FEW PEOPLE MAY APPROVE THE ABOVE STATED NOTION, YET I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH THE STATEMENT. HOWEVER, NUMBER OF ARGUMENTS IN THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS SURROUND MY OPINION.

TO COMMENSE WITH THE FIRST ARGUMENT, IT CAN BE SAID THAT PRINTED BOOKS OR NEWSPAPER MAY BE LESS IN AMOUNT BUT IT WILL NOT COMPELETELY DISAPPEAR AS THE HARDBOOKS WILL USED AS A PART OF STUDY MATERIAL IN THE FUTURE. MOREOVER AGED PEOPLE ARE NOT TOO MUCH FAMILIER WITH THE TECHNOLOGY , THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCES ALL THE ONLINE PLATFORM SO THEY PREFFERED TO READ NEWSPAPER AND BOOKS FROM HARDCOPY RATHER THAN FROM THE INTERNET. TO ILLUSTRATE, MOST FO STUDENTS AND READERS PREFER TO READ FROM BOOKS AS THEY DO NOT CAUSE EYE STAIN. MOREOVER, THEY PROVIDE BETTER READING EXPERIENCE WITHOUT ANY DISTRACTION.

NEXT COMES ANOTHER FACTOR LIKE, NEWSPAPER AND BOOKS HAVE CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE, AS READING IMPROVE CONCENTRATION POWER AND HELP TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY AS ONE CAN MAKE HIGHLIGHTS OF DIFFICULT AND NEW WORDS WHICH HELPS TO REMEMBER THAT PARTICULAR WORD FOR LONG PERIOD. AS A RESULT ONE HAVE HIGH AMOUNT OF VOCABULARY AS COMPARE A PERSON WHO PREFERED TO READ ONLINE BOOKS.

ON CONTRARY, SOME PEOPLE CAN STILL FIND WHO FAVOUR THE GIVEN STATEMENT FOR OTHER REASONS LIKE, E-BOOKS AND NEWSPAPER WILL REDUCE THE FINANCIAL BURDEN FOR BUYING SUCH BOOKS EVERY YEAR FOR STUDENTS AND PAY WEEKLY BILLS FOR NEWSPAPERS AS ALL THESE INFORMATION MATERIAL FOUND ON THE INTERNET WITH JUST ONE CLICK WITHOUT PAYING AND EXTRA CHARGES. FOR EXAMPLE, IT PROVE AS ECO-FRIENDLY AS LESS REQUIREMENT OF PAPER REFLECT THE LESS CONSUME OF TRESS AND REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CHOPPING TRESS WHICH SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT.

FINALLY TO CONCLUDE, IT CAN BE SAID THAT DESPITE OF HAVING ADVANTAGES, I REUTE THE MENTIONED NOTION AS IT CAUSES MANY CONCERNS IF FOLLOWED FIRMLY.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position against the statement and providing supporting arguments. Ideas are presented regarding study materials, older generations, eye strain, and environmental impact. However, some arguments are underdeveloped or repetitive, such as the points about concentration and vocabulary, which are touched upon briefly without full extension. The opening paragraph contains excessive capitalization and irrelevant meta-language ('IT IS DEFINITELY A HARD NET TO CRACK...'). Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6 because it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is generally coherent with a clear overall arrangement, dividing points into logical paragraphs. Paragraphing is used to separate main ideas (e.g., 'TO COMMENSE WITH', 'NEXT COMES ANOTHER FACTOR', 'ON CONTRARY'). However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical, such as 'TO COMMENSE WITH', 'ON CONTRARY' (missing article), and 'FINALLY TO CONCLUDE'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and transitional phrases lack smooth integration. This aligns with Band 6 descriptors, where cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always completely clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'eco-friendly', 'financial burden', and 'significance'. However, there are frequent noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, including 'FAMILIER' (familiar), 'ACCES' (access), 'PREFFERED' (preferred), 'FO STUDENTS' (for students), 'REUTE' (refute), and 'CONSUME OF TRESS' (consumption of trees). These errors occasionally require the reader to slow down, though they do not completely impede communication. This corresponds to a Band 5.5 or solid Band 6 performance; given the vocabulary attempts and adequate breadth, a Band 6 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are persistent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('reading improve', 'one have', 'it prove'), missing articles ('ON CONTRARY', 'AS COMPARE A PERSON'), and incorrect preposition usage. The writing also features complete sentences written in ALL CAPS, which affects formatting and tone. Because simple and complex structures are mixed but errors are frequent enough to cause some distraction without completely impeding communication, the grammar fits Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0.
