IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nobody will buy newspapers and books in future because all things are available online and technology is increasing day by day.

In this era all the things are converted into computer based system and life is fast in these days and we do not have time for many things which we like to do as a hobby. If we want to read a book we do not have time to go and buy it if the shop is far away from our home. So all things are available online in present time and in future we have more advance versions related to technology. We only need a mobile phone and internet to read any kind of news or book.

It is really easy to find a book online and read it when ever we want and no one knows what we are readind or doing in our phones. News spread very fastly and we know it through our social media apps so thats a big reason of printed newspaper will be end soon. People do not want to sit and make a proper plan to read in light so online reading is good in many aspects. Many books which we do not find in shops are present in apps.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that nobody will buy any kind ofbook or printed newspaper in future due to AI technology and also due to easy accessibility to whatever we want to read we will find in single click.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by agreeing with the statement that printed newspapers and books will disappear due to online availability and technological advancements. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas are relatively basic and lack deep extension or detailed supporting examples, relying instead on generalisations about speed and convenience. Furthermore, the response is 247 words long, failing to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words. This under-length impacts the overall development of the task and prevents the score from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should expand on their arguments with concrete examples, such as the environmental impact of paper or specific e-reader statistics, and ensure they meet the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the body paragraphs tend to bundle multiple disparate ideas together rather than focusing on a single well-developed theme. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic and repetitive, such as 'In this era', 'If we want', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example in sentences like 'no one knows what we are readind or doing in our phones', where logical flow between clauses feels disjointed. Progression is present, but it lacks the smooth logical transitions expected at higher band levels. To improve, the student should use a wider variety of sophisticated cohesive links and ensure each paragraph has a clear central topic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for conveying basic meaning, but the range is quite limited and repetitive. Words like 'things', 'online', 'read', and 'technology' are heavily overused throughout the text. There are also noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'readind' instead of 'reading' and 'fastly' instead of 'quickly'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are minimal, with phrases like 'AI technology' and 'easy accessibility' appearing briefly in the conclusion without substantial integration elsewhere. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider repertoire of precise academic vocabulary and idiomatic phrases, while paying closer attention to word formation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are frequently prone to errors. Run-on sentences and punctuation slips are common, such as the lack of commas in compound-complex structures ('If we want to read a book we do not have time...'). There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues and awkward phrasing like 'in future we have more advance versions' and 'printed newspaper will be end soon'. While these errors do not completely obscure the writer's meaning, they occur with enough frequency to impede smooth reading. To improve, the student must focus on sentence boundaries, accurate verb tense usage, and the correct formation of subordinate clauses.
