IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The topic is about newspaper or books. In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything on mobile phones and television online without paying any kind of cost.

In this generation individuals mostly depends on technology and they use their mobile phones and television more and more. So mostly people cannot read newspapers and books because they cannot have time to read. Usually they also doing most of work in online websites. Some individuals cannot work their office because they do online work at home in laptops and mobile phones. Ans it is time saviour thing for all.

But in this genertion some people like to read books and newspapers because they have interested in reading so many kinds of books and newspaper live. I partially agree with this statement because in this generation mobile phones and other electronic things are useful, but another side newspaper and books are also good for teenagers and childrens. Because when they read live newspaper and books their mind will be sharp and they become intelligent.

In conclusion, individuals use mobile phones more than newspapers and books to read something, but in my opinion books and newspaper are more useful and good for students. they have to decreased electronic things in their life

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt and attempts to present a position, but the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The student briefly mentions the arguments for free online reading versus the benefits of traditional books, but ideas remain under-developed throughout the essay. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met: the student's response contains only 218 words, falling well short of the mandatory 250-word minimum. This negative impact on length, combined with the lack of fully extended supporting ideas, places the task response in the lower band spectrum. To improve, the writer needs to ensure they write at least 250 words and expand upon their central arguments with more detailed explanations and concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, demonstrating an awareness of standard essay structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall logical progression is frequently hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive phrasing, such as 'In this generation' appearing multiple times. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are noticeably absent, making the flow somewhat disjointed. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with pronouns whose antecedents are ambiguous. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks sophistication. To achieve a higher score, the student should employ a wider variety of cohesive markers to connect ideas smoothly and ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus supported by logical sequencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The lexical resource displayed in the essay is basic and repetitive. The student relies heavily on simple vocabulary, such as 'good', 'use', and 'things', and frequently repeats phrases like 'in this generation'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'read live newspaper' instead of 'print newspapers', and 'time saviour thing' instead of 'time-saving measure'. Spelling is generally acceptable for common words, but the limited range of vocabulary and lack of less common lexical items restrict the communicative effectiveness. To improve, the student should actively build a broader academic vocabulary related to technology, media, and reading habits, and practice using precise collocations rather than general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple and occasionally flawed compound sentences. Attempts at complex structures are frequently inaccurate, as demonstrated by ungrammatical constructions such as 'individuals mostly depends on technology' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'they have to decreased electronic things' (incorrect verb form). There are frequent errors in tense usage, article selection, and word forms throughout the text. While meaning can generally be deciphered, these recurring errors cause strain for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer must focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and incorporating a greater variety of error-free complex sentences.
