IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people think that nobody will buy books or printed newspaper in the future because they can read every thing on internet without paying. This online reading is free of cost for every one thats why nobody will buy newspaper.I agreed with this because there are some more advantages of it than disadvantages.

On the first hand, online reading is very convenient for everybody. People should read newspaper and all kind of books free on internet. They don't have to buy newspaper or books. All people have access to internet, it makes easier reading. People can read books and news on their mobile phones free. For instance, there are many websites which gives information about all over the world free. They just have to download the books and can read easily. Peope don't have to take books with them because they have thousands of books in their phone. They can read anywhere. It saves paper and is also good for environment.

On the other hand, many people still like to read printed newspaper and books. They like the smell of the pages and holding books in their hands. They believe reading books have different feeling of calm. Some people don't believe on online information. In some rular areas, there is no facility of internet. So that, they have to buy printed books and newspaper everyday. They also think that screen reading for the long time is not good for eyes. It can effect our health.

In conclusion, although many people read books and newspaper online, but I think printed books and newspaper should still exsist for some people in rular areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt partially, presenting a position that is somewhat clear at the beginning with the statement 'I agreed with this because there are some more advantages of it than disadvantages,' though the conclusion introduces a slight contradiction by stating that printed materials should still exist for people in rural areas. Ideas are limited and under-developed, relying heavily on generalized repetition regarding convenience, environmental benefits, and the preference for physical books. Key points such as the claim that everything will be available 'without paying' are touched upon but not fully explored or substantiated with deep arguments. To move to a higher level, the writer would need to provide fully developed, extended ideas with clearer supporting examples that directly analyze the economic and cultural implications of digital versus printed media.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, satisfying basic paragraphing requirements. However, progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices, such as the recurring use of 'On the first hand' and 'On the other hand,' alongside simplistic transitional phrases like 'So that.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in pronoun usage and abrupt shifts between ideas within paragraphs. To achieve a stronger level of logical organization and cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally, ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and maintain a clear, unbroken logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message of the essay. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'convenient,' 'environment,' and 'information,' but these are often accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, including phrases like 'free of cost,' 'makes easier reading,' and 'rular areas' (misspelling of rural). Furthermore, there is repetitive use of basic words like 'books,' 'newspaper,' and 'free.' These lexical slips and spelling errors occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to natural collocations, and eliminate basic spelling and word-formation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical structures employed show a limited range, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('access to internet,' 'for the long time'), subject-verb agreement issues ('websites which gives,' 'reading books have'), preposition errors, and punctuation slips like comma splices ('every one thats why'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher standard, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical patterns, improve article and pluralization accuracy, and produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences.
