Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, online reading is becoming increasingly popular. The statement says that in the future, nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. I disagree with this view because printed materials are still preferred by many people and some online content is not available for free. I blieved in hard from of newspaper is best for everyone.

Firstly, many people still prefer printed newspapers and books. This is because they enjoy the experience of reading a hard copy. For example, some people find it easier to concentrate when they read a printed book. Therefore, printed materials may continue to be popular in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the statement, but the length requirement of at least 250 words is not met, as the essay contains only 193 words. The ideas presented are relevant to the topic, such as the preference for physical copies and the cost of online subscriptions. However, these ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the assertion that 'hard from of newspaper is best for everyone' is stated without sufficient extension or supporting detail. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand the response to meet the word count minimum and develop each main body point more thoroughly with extended explanations and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, relying heavily on basic transitional markers such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'In conclusion.' Furthermore, referencing and logical progression are slightly disrupted by abrupt sentences near paragraph endings, such as 'few website is correct news apdates,' which lack smooth integration into the surrounding text. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that all concluding sentences within paragraphs flow naturally from the preceding arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic ideas about online reading and subscriptions. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'subscriptions' and 'disappear,' but encounters noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples include 'hard from' instead of 'hard copy' and 'apdates' instead of 'updates,' alongside awkward phrasing like 'few website is correct news apdates.' These inaccuracies occasionally cause minor strain for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer should expand the lexical range and exercise greater accuracy in word formation, spelling, and collocations when discussing more complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few basic complex forms. While some sentences are accurate, there are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and prepositions, such as 'I blieved in hard from' and missing articles or pluralization issues. These grammatical lapses can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To progress to the next level, the writer must demonstrate better control over a wider variety of complex grammatical structures and eliminate frequent errors in basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and word grammar.
