Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt regarding whether free online reading will completely replace printed newspapers and books in the future, presenting a clear personal position that agrees with the statement. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed, placing the response at this level. While the writer touches on relevant themes such as cost, environmental impact, and convenience, these points are repetitive and lack extension or concrete examples. For instance, the claim that printed books cause stress and headaches is stated without sufficient elaboration or support. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to expand upon each supporting point with detailed explanations and fully developed arguments rather than relying on brief, generalized assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization evident in the response, with an introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is underutilized, as the main body of the essay is compressed into one excessively long and dense paragraph that covers multiple disparate ideas. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively throughout the text, such as the constant repetition of transitional phrases and referencing that is not always clear. For example, pronouns like 'they' and 'it' occasionally create ambiguity regarding what is being referred to. To improve, the writer should divide the body of the essay into distinct, logically themed paragraphs and employ a wider, more natural variety of cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Instances of awkward phrasing include 'online books are very cheaper' and spelling mistakes like 'convienent', 'arround', 'whith', 'moderan', and 'concious'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts often result in inaccurate collocations, such as 'reduce the use of printed books because paper cause some poolution'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word forms and spelling, and ensure that vocabulary is chosen precisely to convey meaning naturally without frequent errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing exhibits a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, articles, plurals, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples of these errors include 'I am completely agree', 'people's focus was shifted', 'in anytime', 'from there gadgets', and 'you can'nt need this'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and distraction for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, improve punctuation, and practice constructing error-free complex sentences with accurate verb tenses and forms.
