Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. It touches upon the prompt regarding online versus printed media, but the discussion is limited and the position is not always clearly sustained throughout the text. Furthermore, the response is under the required length, falling short of the two-hundred and fifty-word minimum by thirty-seven words, which restricts the depth of the arguments. Ideas such as the advantages and disadvantages of studying online are presented using bullet-point headings rather than a fully developed essay structure, leading to under-developed support for the writer's views. To reach a higher level, the writer must extend the response to meet the minimum word count and present fully supported, cohesive paragraphs rather than fragmented notes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the text, shown by the use of headings like 'advantages-', 'disadvantages-', and 'solution-', but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are inadequate or absent, and the formatting relies on unstandardised bullet points and fragments rather than a traditional essay structure. Paragraphing is not used appropriately, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as when the writer shifts abruptly between topics without smooth transitions. To improve, the writer needs to group ideas into proper paragraphs with clear topic sentences and use a wider range of appropriate cohesive links to guide the reader logically through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies on basic and repetitive terms, such as 'online books', 'good thing', and 'study things', with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, including 'pronounciation' and 'sentense'. There are also awkward collocations and phrasing like 'every coin have to sides'. These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire by incorporating less common vocabulary and idiomatic expressions with greater precision and correct spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, such as 'even if we are lacking in the pronounciation...', these attempts are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'every coin have', incorrect prepositions such as 'as compares to' and 'relaying less to', and missing articles. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns, master verb forms and prepositions, and increase the frequency of error-free sentences.
