Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of disagreement with the statement, arguing that printed books and newspapers will still hold importance. However, the execution remains limited as ideas are somewhat under-developed. While the writer touches on reasons why online reading is popular—such as convenience and accessibility—and why print retains value—such as comfort and reducing screen strain—these points are presented generally without sufficient extension or detailed examples. For instance, mentioning platforms like BBC is a relevant attempt, but it lacks full elaboration. To reach the next level, the writer needs to present fully developed main ideas supported by more robust explanations and specific illustrations throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a clear attempt to structure the essay into paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall coherent arrangement. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or faulty cohesive devices and repetitive referencing. For example, expressions like 'The other things is that' create awkward transitions between sentences, and referencing within paragraphs is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift to pronouns like 'we' in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion lacks flexibility and smooth flow. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers and ensure that logical relationships between sentences are clearly established without repetitive phrasing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer displays a minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for addressing the topic, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'digital era', 'convenient', and 'detrimental effects'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, word form, and collocations that reveal limitations, such as 'is reducing' instead of 'is declining', 'more easy' instead of 'easier', 'respective websites' where 'respective' is misused, and spelling issues like 'conclusions' and 'stiil'. Furthermore, expressions like 'some people are prefer to books' show confusion with word forms. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, improve precision in word choice, and eliminate basic errors in spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing relies on a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors across the text, particularly concerning verb forms, agreement, and articles. Examples include 'trends of printed newspapers... is reducing' (subject-verb agreement), 'is upload on a internet' (missing articles and incorrect passive verb form), 'Younger generation is prefer' (mixed verb structures), and 'the cutting of forest are effected' (passive voice misuse). Punctuation and capitalization errors are also noticeable, such as lowercase beginnings after full stops and run-on phrasing like 'freeand convenientand'. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free complex structures and exercise much closer control over basic grammatical rules, articles, and verb tenses.
