IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, the growth of the internet has relegated to the background some traditional ways of doing things and making things like newspaper and books easily accessible. This essay's thrust will be focused on how true the above affirmation is.
In the future there will barely be anyone buying books or newspapers because mobile phones and other GSM gadgets will not just be produced in mass but Newspaper outlets and publishers will continue building online pages to meet the demands of this high numbers of users which culminates to faster spread of publication and popularity which is what most publishers need at the moment to make money.
I believe in the future that there might be no need for newspapaer and books as soft copy books are less expensive with same content as the hardcopy and news been accessed even for free in most platforms then the question will be; who will go for an expensive and difficult to get outlet as against the convenient means?. It is imperative to note that it is an efficient system that disposes off the old order of which newspaper and books are no exception.
Again, Internet has a better means of advertisement which producers prefer and are relegating to the background the old model of sales of their publication hence, the demise of the age of newspapers and hardcopy books. Not just is the internet a convenient platform for producers to market their outlets but with the monetisation of most platforms and engagement trends, there are barely offline outlets which is a clear indication that we are transcending a new era that will see the wrapping up of offline newspaper and books.
In conclusion, though some may argue that offline newspaper and books are still golden and could still be sustained as advanced people are still keen on this method but the truth is no business operator would see a more convenient and profitable method and still not evolve. The evolution of technology does not wait for no one or technique that don't want to evolve with it and that includes newspapers and books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding the future of printed media, supported by relevant arguments about cost efficiency and digital convenience. However, certain ideas are left somewhat under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on digital advertising and monetization in the fourth paragraph touches upon an interesting point about producer preferences, but it lacks specific expansion or concrete examples to fully substantiate the claim. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend these supporting ideas more thoroughly rather than circling back to the same general points about technology and evolution.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance maintained throughout, supported by standard paragraphing. Information and ideas flow in a logical sequence, moving from internet growth to cost advantages and advertising models. Nevertheless, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly clunky, particularly with transitional phrasing such as 'The essay's thrust will be focused on...' and 'then the question will be; who will go for...'. Additionally, referencing becomes slightly unclear in places due to run-on sentences that combine multiple distinct ideas without adequate parsing. Enhancing the variety and subtlety of cohesive devices would improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'relegated to the background', 'monetisation', and 'transcending a new era'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text. Examples include 'produced in mass' instead of 'mass-produced', 'high numbers of users which culminates to' where 'culminates in' is required, 'newspapaer' containing a spelling error, and 'news been accessed' which displays an awkward phrase structure. These lexical inaccuracies and minor spelling lapses occasionally distract the reader, though communication is never severely impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. These include subject-verb agreement issues and missing articles, such as 'Internet has a better means' instead of 'The internet has a better means', punctuation errors with semicolons and colons, and awkward prepositional usage in phrases like 'transcending a new era' instead of 'transitioning into a new era'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures remain generally understandable.
