IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Online learning platform taking place of books and newspaper. Nowaday it is more cheap method for people to find books and news on online. Owing to this several printing company would close soon. Although it online reading offer some benefits to consumer, I disagree with this concren due to several reasons which will be discussed in the forthcoming paragraphs.

Predominantly, online reading method is cheap. Every single individual can afford it without paying any extra cost. For instance, medical books are far more expensive not poor person can buy these it, but with the rapid growth of technology that material they could find online free of cost. Moreover, it is convenient and can have many books and news in single portable device. which is easy to carry anywhere. Consequently, if people have these facility without any cost , they will recommend themselves solely online books instead of purchasing books from outside.

However, even though online platform give opportunity users to read material freely, still there are few elder people who are not much familiar with online devices. That citizens like the aroma of the paper while they read they feel emotionaly attached with the content. Apart from it, news paper and books shows always real information or data, that online platform could not provide. That website not only mislead the clients but also waste there considerable time. Thus, books and newspaper agency could not be replaced by online reading, since it is essential for both elders and real content.

In conclusion, although online reading material concered as a convenient and cheap, I believe it could not be repleced with real books and newspapers.

Overall5.5

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position on whether free online reading will completely replace printed books and newspapers. The writer covers both sides of the argument, discussing the economic and convenience benefits of digital platforms alongside the continued appeal of physical media and concerns regarding credibility. However, some ideas remain under-developed. For instance, the point regarding the unreliability of online information is introduced without sufficient expansion or specific examples. Similarly, the discussion around elderly readers relies on general assertions rather than fully elaborated arguments. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend these supporting points with deeper explanations and more comprehensive examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The writer uses basic cohesive devices to connect ideas, such as 'Predominantly', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in sentences like 'That citizens like the aroma of the paper... they feel emotionaly attached with the content.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother and better linked. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices without repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to communicate the main arguments. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'portable device' and 'emotionaly attached', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling. For example, 'more cheap' should be 'cheaper', 'concren' should be 'concern', and 'news paper' should be one word. Additionally, there are inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing, such as 'recommend themselves solely online books'. These lexical errors and awkward formations occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, which reflects the current band level. Improving precision and spelling accuracy will be essential for lexical advancement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple forms alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, articles, plurals, and prepositions, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of these errors include 'Online learning platform taking place', 'several printing company would close', 'not poor person can buy these it', and 'that material they could find online free of cost.' Punctuation errors, such as misplaced periods and missing commas, also detract from the control of grammar. To reach a higher standard, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate better command over complex clause structures.
