IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that printed newspaper or books will not be used. While some people believe users can read everything in online without subscription, I completely partially agree with this view for several reasons.
One primary reason why I agree is that convenience, speed and cost. This is because it is very easy to get information over the social media and updated the new data with one click. For example, I want to know what happend at the cricket stadium. For this i do not need to wait for tomorrow newspaper, i can get it by browsing on the internet which is free and speed compared to newspaper. It convenient because laptops, phones and tablets can carry thousands of book or magazines.
Another significant resaon why I disagree is that not every thing was free and i would respect the value of ownership. In mobile phones or browsers not every thing was free to use, some times we need to pay for what we use. For instance, authors, journalists and publishers need money for thier work, similarly quality of books or vedios will be charged more for usage. The other reason would be value of ownership, it comes under illegal activity like taking something from someone without their permission. For example, some books are not digitalized by the owner but some people will publish documents without taking any copy rights.
In conclusion, no one will prefer printed newspaper or books due to digitalization and piracy. I partially agree because it occured due to convenience, speed and cost. Disagree because not every thing was free and value of ownership.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue, presenting a position that leans towards a partial agreement. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer introduces points regarding convenience, speed, and cost, but these are supported with very basic personal examples like checking cricket scores. Similarly, the arguments concerning piracy and ownership are generalized without deep elaboration. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend these ideas further, providing more fully developed explanations and maintaining a consistently clear and consistent position throughout all paragraphs rather than stating a contradictory or confusing stance in the conclusion where both agreement and disagreement are restated abruptly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation evident in the text, with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the response lacks a clear overall progression across the essay. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, mechanical, or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'Another significant reason' and 'For example'. Additionally, referencing and logical transitions between sentences are sometimes faulty, making the flow somewhat disjointed. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive markers and ensure that each paragraph transitions smoothly into the next, establishing a clear logical link from the introduction through to the final summary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing the topic of digital versus print media, including terms like 'digitalization', 'publishers', and 'subscription'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation throughout the text. Examples include 'newspaper or books' instead of 'newspapers or books', 'over the social media' instead of 'on social media', 'updated the new data' instead of 'updating data', and 'vedios'. There are also awkward expressions like 'value of ownership' and 'not digitalized by the owner'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on accurate word choice, correct suffixes, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader, including problems with subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and missing plural markers. Notable errors include 'printed newspaper or books will not be used' (plural agreement), 'I completely partially agree' (contradictory modifiers), 'convenience, speed and cost' used ungrammatically in a clause structure, 'what happend' (spelling and tense), 'tomorrow newspaper' (possessive noun form), and 'not every thing was free' (tense shift). To reach the next level, the writer needs to increase sentence variety and maintain much greater accuracy across both simple and complex structures.
