Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to discuss whether printed newspapers and books will disappear in favour of free online content, the position is not always clear, and the overall stance shifts slightly between paragraphs. For instance, the introduction mentions that newspapers are declining, but the second paragraph argues that books and newspapers are still in high demand, and the conclusion contains a contradictory statement suggesting both that the original format is the priority and that the youth may prefer social media. Ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on general assertions about how newspapers contain various fields and columns for kids without fully exploring the core economic or practical implications of free online reading versus paid physical formats.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression of argument throughout the essay. While paragraphing is used to separate different points, the transitions between paragraphs can feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or over-used, such as starting multiple sentences with 'However' or 'To commence with', which creates a mechanical feel. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'taking charge over it' where the pronoun antecedent is imprecise. The overall logical flow is hindered by abrupt shifts in focus between the benefits of print and the appeal of social media.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'contemporary age', 'interwoven', and 'sensation', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'bascially hard copy', 'various kind of field', and 'beign published'. There are also minor spelling and typographical issues, such as 'ecause' and 'colleages'. These lexical slips and restricted range mean that the vocabulary remains at a basic level, occasionally causing minor difficulties or hesitation for the reader without completely blocking communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are multiple errors involving subject-verb agreement, articles, plurals, and prepositions, such as 'Newspapers are integral part', 'It has become morning ritual', 'printed version of news not only have', and 'As phone comes handy'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the final paragraph where run-on phrasing and missing terminal punctuation affect sentence boundaries. These frequent grammatical errors require some effort from the reader to parse, placing the writing firmly in the mid-range of accuracy.
