IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

yes this is true and i am totally agree with that in my opinion we face alot of advancement in the it industry in 2026. We have different app to use where people can connect to each other share their thoughts .If we specifically talked about printed newspapers this industry is in their downfall as only our old citizens wants to read newspaper because they can't able to interact with latest devices as compared to the younger generation, who are fully interacting with new-era technology .Yes that is true in the coming future it become so normal that even old people can handle and able to use the technology or you can say the gadgets but this is about urban areas where technology is common . i also want to discuss about the rural areas where technology is not very common not even in news industry at this point we can say that it is not fully possible that In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers because villagers people not much familier with advancement as compared to urban areas .So in this situation they might going to need newpaper .I think there is less possibility to completely vanished this . this is some thing not about money but about education ,the people from 19'ss are not well educated i am not talking about every one but yes this is a fact and i think i have to highlight this point as well to better cover my point and i think thats all .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer takes a clear position agreeing with the prompt, the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of the IT industry in 2026 and the contrast between urban and rural areas are introduced but lack extension, explanation, or solid supporting examples. The reasoning tends to drift into conversational remarks such as 'i think i have to highlight this point as well to better cover my point and i think thats all', which reflects a limited awareness of academic conventions and formatting. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each main idea with clear explanations and well-supported arguments rather than just listing brief thoughts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some organisation evident in the writing, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The response is presented as one massive block of text without proper paragraphing, which makes following the logical flow extremely difficult. Furthermore, cohesive devices are largely inadequate or misused. The text relies heavily on repetitive phrases like 'yes this is true' and conversational conjunctions without employing a variety of logical transition words or clear referencing to link ideas smoothly. To achieve a better band score, the writer must divide the essay into distinct paragraphs with clear topic sentences and use a wider range of cohesive devices accurately to guide the reader through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, featuring phrases like 'it industry', 'latest devices', and 'new-era technology'. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'villagers people' instead of 'rural residents' or 'villagers', and 'familier' (spelling error). Other issues like 'alot' and 'newpaper' also highlight control limitations. While communication is not entirely blocked, these errors and the restricted range of vocabulary cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should incorporate less common lexical items, ensure correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and precise word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and run-on clauses joined by loose punctuation. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, seen in examples like 'because they can't able to interact with latest devices as compared to the younger generation'. Frequent errors are present across verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles—such as 'i am totally agree', 'industry is in their downfall', and 'this is some thing'. Punctuation is also heavily neglected, with missing capitalisation and comma splices throughout the text. These frequent errors can cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to practise forming accurate complex sentences and check for basic agreement and tense consistency.
