IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Due to the development of technologies, some people argue that in the comming future nobody will purchase physical books or newspapers as they can read all materials online for free. I partially agree with this opinion and in this essay I will discuss why I hold this view.

Digital tablets and widespread availability of the Internet have a significant impact on reading materials. People can read all kind of information using their digital tablets as it all allow them to dowload and read books, which is more convenient than purchasing them from book stors. For example, students can download and read biology, anatomy and others type of books from digital libraries with reading them physically, as it consume less physical space and can access them even if they travel. As a result, printed version will be less attractive in future. However, this not because the digital books free online, as students also need to pay for them.

In addition, another reason may lead to reduce the dependance on printed version of reading material is that the financial benefits. This is because printed version need large and sophisticated printer machine and substantial amout of money for workforces, papers, electricity bills, and renting accommodation for maufactures, which in turns will increase the cost of books or newspapers. Meaning that, this will make them not affordable for readers, while digital version not required this unnecessary expenditures. Eventully reducing the cost of digital books compared with printed ones. As a result, this will provide financial benefit for consumers and allow more people to read.

In conclusion, digital reading materials are expacted to dominant over the physical versions primarily because the convenience and affordability that it offers, and nothing will be for free.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that you partially agree with the statement. You correctly identify that while convenience and digital formats will likely dominate, reading materials will not necessarily be free. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the second body paragraph discusses convenience reasonably well with examples of students downloading books, but the argument regarding digital books not being free is introduced rather abruptly at the very end of that paragraph without sufficient expansion. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be fully extended and supported with clear reasoning throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a logical progression of ideas as you move from the impact of digital tablets to the financial benefits of digital formats. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing can occasionally be unclear. For example, phrases such as 'In addition, another reason may lead to reduce the dependance...' rely on repetitive transitional structures, and referencing words like 'this' or 'it' occasionally lack a precise, immediate antecedent. Improving the variety and seamless integration of cohesive devices would elevate the organizational quality.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'sophisticated', 'expenditures', and 'dominat'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'comming' instead of coming, 'dowload' instead of download, 'stors' instead of stores, 'dependance' instead of dependence, 'maufactures' instead of manufacturers, and 'expacted' instead of expected. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, better control of word forms, and correct spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include 'all kind of information' instead of all kinds of information, 'digital version not required' instead of digital versions do not require, and issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'with reading them physically'. To reach a higher level, you should increase the proportion of error-free sentences when attempting complex structures and maintain tighter control over subject-verb agreement and auxiliary verbs.
